Sovereignty for Canada was a long, slow process. Initially considered a colony, Canada gradually freed itself from Great Britain and acquired its independence. Even today, the country must periodically reaffirm its sovereignty on the international scene. The events in this section - the Battle of Vimy Ridge and the Halibut War - have very different historical contexts, players, and stakes.
